Have children do your wedding reading

Wedding reading.jpg

The majority of wedding ceremonies, whether in a church or a civil service will have time for a reading built in. Readings are an incredibly personal addition to the service and are often read out by someone who is very dear to the couple.

The normal tradition is to have an adult delivering the reading, but there is absolutely nothing to say that a child couldn’t take on this job instead. So, if you have a special child in your life that you think could be up to the task, then we have put together some fantastic readings that are not only simple enough to be perfect for children, but are incredibly touching too.

The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

We love the romance and imagery used in this particular text. It is ideal for older children to read and can be delivered in a civil ceremony as well as in a church service.

I will love you forever; whatever happens. Till I die and after I die, and when I find my way out of the land of the dead, I’ll drift about forever, all my atoms, till I find you again… I’ll be looking for you, every moment, every single moment. And when we do find each other again, we’ll cling together so tight that nothing and no one will ever tear us apart. Every atom of me and every atom of you… We’ll live in birds and flowers and dragonflies and pine trees and in clouds and in those little specks of light you see floating in sunbeams… And when they use our atoms to make new lives, they won’t just be able to take one, they’ll have to take two, one of you and one of me, we’ll be joined so tight…

A Good Wedding Cake

This is a popular wedding for adults to read out, but we think if it is read by a child that it takes on a whole new meaning. It is also a fun on for them to read too!

4lb of love.
 1lb butter of youth.
 ½lb of good looks.
 1lb sweet temper.
 1lb of blindness of faults.
 1lb of self forgetfulness.
 1lb of pounded wit.
 1lb of good humour.
 2 tablespoons of sweet argument.
 1 pint of rippling laughter.
1 wine glass of common sense.
 1oz modesty.
Put the love, good looks and sweet temper into a well furnished house. Beat the butter of youth to a cream, and mix well together with the blindness of faults. Stir the pounded wit and good humour into the sweet argument, then add the rippling laughter and common sense. Work the whole together until everything is well mixed, and bake gently for ever.

Your personal penguin

This is an ideal reading for smaller children to read as it really isn’t very long. The book itself is packed full of lovely pictures too, which makes it ideal to capture their imagination and keep them interested.

I like you a lot.
 You're funny and kind.
 So let me explain
 What I have in mind.
I want to be your personal penguin.
I want to walk right by your side.
I want to be your personal penguin.
I want to travel with you far and wide.

It is important to remember that whatever piece of text you choose, it will need to be appropriate for children to read. It is better to opt for shorter pieces, as this will take the pressure off of them and make sure that they don’t become frightened as they see how many people are around.

Always make sure you encourage other members of the family to help them to practice. Especially if you want them reading it to be a surprise for your big day. They will need to read it quite a few times to get comfortable with it, so have someone on hand to listen.

Children are a wonderful addition to any wedding day, so make the most of them and have them deliver a reading that is sure to create a treasured memory.
